Insulation at Sea. At its Best. By Pyrotek.
The challenges
Pyrotek’s premium acoustic and thermal solutions were selected to play an important role in onboard comfort of a vessel built by Circa Marine. Pyrotek was brought in to provide specialist advice and to design and manufacture a customised acoustic and thermal package. This turnkey solution was to ensure a comfortable voyage to both crew and passengers on Mollymawk, the 24M Expedition Motor Yacht.
Very early in the design process, it was established that the owner had a keen involvement and well-rounded understanding of the desired comfort levels aboard. Mollymawk is a vessel equipped for both high latitudes and tropical situations and without a well designed and installed insulation system, all the benefits from heating and cooling would be lost very quickly.
Circa Marine, a long-established shipbuilder in New Zealand, and their design team understand the importance of giving their customers the confidence and high level of comfort at sea. They went the extra mile to seek expert advice from Pyrotek and brought the Acoustic and Thermal team in New Zealand and Australia “on board” to design and deliver a custom insulation package for the boat.
The solutions
The focus on performance – fire, thermal, noise & vibration - continued with Circa Marine’s project team, discussing in-depth details of best insulation practices. Through an open negotiation of possibilities, what could and should be done, ensuring passenger safety and comfort, Pyrotek used their extensive know-how, experience, & engineering tools to design the ideal solution to fit the vessel and desired outcomes. The team predicted transmission losses, calculated thermal performances in varying circumstances, and developed a customised total comfort package. This encompassed materials for vibration damping & isolation, reduction of air-borne transferred noise and reverberation, and incorporated thermal and fire solutions, all within the weight and cost allowances, delivered on time.
The internal aluminium plating and elements of the vessel were coated in Pyrotek’s Decicoat T35, a thermal anti-condensation and corrosion insulation. This is a water-based, spray-on coating that combines thermal and vibration damping properties and was complemented with further thermal and acoustic insulation such as Sorberpoly, added above this in many places. Machinery areas have Decidamp, a high-performance, fast drying, water-based viscoelastic vibration damping compound with thermal insulating properties.
In the voids and other spaces, Sorberpoly absorber and Quadzero barrier have been installed to enhance acoustic and thermal insulation levels. A comprehensive system was developed for the engine room and machinery spaces for thermal and acoustic isolation and fire protection.
The results
Pyrotek’s turnkey acoustic and thermal solutions package, custom designed for the 24M Expedition Yacht, now ensures absolute onboard comfort, whatever latitude she finds herself in.
