Enhancing crew comfort, safety and performance for two new firefighting vessels
The challenges
In a groundbreaking project, Birdon a leading global specialist vessel designer and builder, collaborated with Pyrotek for two new 18-metre state-of-the-art firefighting vessels that launched in January 2024. Our solutions were selected to enhance the working environment for first responders managing over 1,000 incidents including fires, oil spills, and water rescues. Addressing noise, and vibration in the engine and pump rooms is a significant challenge, especially with the vessels’ advanced features that demand reliable, and long-lasting quality materials.
The solutions
The crew operate 24/7, 365 days a year, demanding the highest standards of reliability and performance. Birdon chose Pyrotek’s complete system solution for its proven reputation and quality. The vessels are equipped with two fire pumps and twin water jet propulsion systems, which produce high noise and vibrations. Pyrotek’s acoustic solutions, including Decidamp SP150 and Quadzero NL, effectively mitigating these issues, providing a quieter environment for the crew. These solutions enhance the crew’s ability to perform duties with precision during high-stress situations. Both products further prolong the operational life of the vessel and machinery on board, safeguarding the vessels’ equipment for decades to come.
The structural fire protection and thermal insulation materials used were Isover U SeaProtect, a certified material engineered to achieve specific fire ratings, and Isover E-Saver, a specialty marine glass wool with excellent thermal and acoustic properties. These materials were installed into the engine and pump rooms boundaries to further reduce noise, while also maintaining temperature stability and fire protection. Preventing thermal energy transfer from other areas of the vessel ensures efficiency, while also providing crew with the ideal working temperature. These additional layers of insulation promote the crew’s well-being, safety, and productivity.
